    Hi 4un4me

Please feel free to make good use of this forum to flesh out anything you post elsewhere on the site, and to initiate new discussions. If you would like to help moderating this forum, that would be most welcome as I cannot always be completely on top of it due to other commitments, and general time-stress.

Ask Nick to forward an email to me if you would like to discuss this further.

Please verify who invited you to moderate this forum, so far as I am aware I am the only moderator.

Elsin, thanks for your suggestions, they are both good ones, the messaging seems particularly important if people are to make real world contact, which is essential if people are to make real world changes.

Any other suggestions as to how the forums could serve us all better are more than welcome. This is being run on a very limited budget so suggestions as to how this can be done cheaply are more likely to be implemented, but all are welcome.

Publicly listed Corporations are not capable of changing per se as they are legal entities obliged to maximize shareholder profit. This is a major factor in our collective effect on the environment.

Until costs on the environment can be structured in so that companies are obliged to pay for them before they skim off the profit most will not change their attitude. Even if the majority of their board and workers know that this is the right thing to do, they will not change because there will always be competitors prepared to see what they can get away with to gain a competitive edge.

However even without serious economic reform the economics are shifting and corporations are starting to sniff profit from these changes, and that will be a part of the solution.

To bring about a more complete solution we must educate ourselves about the ecologies of the planet, and delve deeper into understanding thst we already have enough in the way of solutions to be getting on with changing both our own attitudes, and our relationship to energy in particular. With a better understanding we can help to embolden politicians to engage in a little joined up thinking on our environmental problems.

    Check out

    http://www.bigpicture.tv

for some attempts at joined up thinking.

Some projects for now and the future.

    Vertical axis wind turbine.

    Solar PV.

    Solar water heating.

    Woodburning Stove/oven charcoal maker.

    Rainwater Harvesting.

    Water Filtration system.

    Methane Digester.

We would eventually like to cover the spectrum of low impact technologies, both ancient and modern.

Our approach is a DIY, rough and ready approach where it doesn’t interfere with the all important notion of energy transformation, where losses must obviously be kept to a minimum.

We currently meet Thursday evenings in Hackney wick and are welcoming new members.

Contact me at peasant(dot)urban(at sign)googlemail(dot)com for more details.

Had this problem on a boat with a steel cabin. Warn damp air coming into contact with cold metal or windows. Result drips, not pleasant in the middle of the night.

    Solution 1

Insulate, use cardboard as a stopgap, ideally have it sprayed with some insulating foam, preferably something non toxic, if such a product exists. you could Skin the inside in such a way that you can push the insulation in with a stick, then use warmcel insulation made from recycled paper which is also fire retardant, and harmless, or shredded paper treated with borax solution, which I believe is the basis of the flame retardant in warmcel insulation,

    Solution 2

    Drive somewhere warm.

Recommend this despite the sad name.

You can do weekends or odd days if you want, though obviously the longer you have the more chance you have to get into it.

Trying to get your head round the enormous shift in thinking and feeling necessary to start living in a more ecologically in tune fashion is no small thing,

    http://www.bigpicture.tv

is a website giving access to hundreds of short interviews with people discussing just this in various aspects.

their tag line is talking heads talking sense. Obviously rock n roll fans too.

Check out the various interviews with Aubrey Meyer one of the architects of “contraction and convergence”. Starting with ‘Fiddle and burn’ and ask yourself why we don’t hear more about ideas such as this in the mainstream media.

Also check out Climate Radio, downloadable from Coinet.org

    https://coinet.org.uk/discussion/climate_radio

Stick one on your ipod and make good use of the time you are forced to spend commuting. Its not all bad news but we rarely hear about the positives.

    Get educated, get active.

Good effort BlueJ, disconnecting is part of the off-grid mindset, but reconnecting in a more intelligent way is just as important. Anyone working towards a more ecologically sound way of life soon starts to understand the importance of local community to their efforts.

Take your Mum with you, ie help her to understand how looking at these questions might make both your lives richer.

Take your friends with you and make some new ones, there will be people in your neighbourhood your own age who are already interested, and many more who could be.

    Keep up the good work.
