Yak wool power plant

Congrats to a U.S. company which won a $667,000 environmental prize for developing an extremely cheap solar-powered cooker and electricity generator.

The umbrella-like design uses yak wool and a cheap Chinese insulation fabric with unusually high reflectivity to focus the sun’s rays and generate about 11 watts of power. It weighs 13 pounds and is expected to last 12 years in the field.

One Earth Designs Inc. CEO Scot Frank said his company will use the money from the Netherlands’ Green Challenge to begin scale production of the $13 product in China, where it was developed and tested.

It was designed by students from MIT, Harvard and Tsinghua universities.
