Michael Jackson’s Earth Song

bye-bye-michael
Michael Jackson in 1995
Michael Jackson sang in his best known environmentally conscious track “Earth Song”: “Did you ever stop to notice, the crying Earth, the weeping shores? What have we done to the world?”

This kind of ecological concern from artists was not common at that time (1995). The brilliant video – which was derided by some of the pop press as “hard to understand” featured shots of wildlife and Jackson walking through a burned out landscape.

In 2007 the pop superstar told Ebony Magazine he was “very concerned” about the “international global warming phenomenon.”

“I wish they would have gotten people’s interest sooner. But it’s never too late…..It’s been described as a runaway train; if we don’t stop it, we’ll never get it (our world) back. So we have to fix it, now.

“That’s what I was trying to do with Earth Song, Heal The World, We Are The World – writing those songs to open up people’s consciousness. I wish people would listen to every word.”

On 29 June 1999, Michael was injured after falling over 50ft when a bridge collapsed during a concert at Munich’s Olympic Stadium. He was singing Earth Song at the time.

Michael Jackson did care about the environment, and its tragic he did not get to make his final comeback  tour before he was taken from us.

EARTH SONG

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain.. .
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaah

What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son…
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaah

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don’t know where we are
Although I know we’ve drifted far

Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can’t even breathe
(What about us)
What about the bleeding Earth
(What about us)
Can’t we feel its wounds
(What about us)
What about nature’s worth
(ooo,ooo)
It’s our planet’s womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We’ve turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We’re ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can’t we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can’t you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

Michael Jackson, “Earth Song” from History: Past, Present and Future — Book 1 (Epic Records, 1995); Bill Bottrell producer, engineer

Things have changed since then and bands like U2, Green Day (21st century breakdown) and Coldplay (Beautiful Word) have begun singing songs to bring attention to vital environmental issues.

  1. Why can’t we say a simple goodbye, or perhaps a simple prayer to Michael, if that’s the only thing we can. Michael has done his thing, while we ‘re still building ours. Anyway! we still have much time to show what we believed our own perfect ways. We’ll just accept that Michael J. can do something we can’t, right? So… “Earth” is touchingggggggrh! So! Dali-ahhh say goodbye to Michael!!! cige dajooon!!!—ferdt

  2. Michael Jackson was one of a kind. My 9 year old daughter has become a fan after she listened to my 20 yr old collection of MJ casettes. That’s the power of his music. Can influence all ages, generation after generation. There will never be another like him. Had he been a social problem, the Justice System would have fixed it. Until then, Love him and Respect him for his wonderful music. I miss u MJ.

  3. “LEAVE HIM ALONE” My feelings exactly!!! Why waste time and energy if you can’t say something nice on anything. Mike made a big difference. Someone needs to concentrate on “the man in the mirror”. U know who U are!!!!

  4. I LOVE this song (the Earth Song)! It’s got a great beat, and the message is very powerful! The comment above (from Jason) is off the mark. There’s no evidence that Neverland Ranch was any more of a contributor to global warming than any other home. And as far as riding home on his own personal jet, I’m not aware of Michael Jackson owning his own jet, but if he did, it certainly would make sense…was he expected to fly on a commercial airline? Is that realistic? Do you ever see entertainers of his caliber flying on Southwest Airlines??? Come on! Finally, as for the allegations of child molestation, he was tried and acquitted twice on these charges. If there had been sufficient evidence against him, he certainly would have been convicted! I think having young children spend the night at his home was unusual, but what about the parents of these kids? Would you allow your children to spend the night unattended at a superstar’s house? I think if anyone deserves blame here, it’s the parents of these children! Think about it…and let Michael R.I.P. He was an extremely talented individual, who touched many lives, and who tried to help the world. Leave him alone!

  5. OK. I don’t want to sound like an ass, but have you ever heard of Neverland Ranch? Do you care to imagine what kind of environmental footprint this egomaniac’s lifestyle had? Sweet baby Jesus, let’s all get teary cause he sang a song about the earth, then flew back home on his own jet to his own damn amusement park!!!! If actions speak louder than words, I can’t see how anyone could classify Michael Jackson as any kind of “hero for the environment”…
