Ive been in the cumulative process of amassing research on modular home and alternative architecture building recently for awhile now and would like to get a little project going here as well. What Im trying to do is establish an economical wilderness retreat in isolated Illinois. Ive explored a menagerie of housing options from Yurts, to mobile homes, to pre fab, to modulars, to container conversion. Pretty much the ones that I think are the neatest and most cost effective are the containers. Alibaba is a killer site that has cutting edge pods for next to nothing. Id like to spend anywhere from $5000 to $15000 on the aggregate project, land, shelter, and services all including. What Im wondering is If anybody has any creative thoughts on how to implement a project like this as far as building a financially thrifty container or modular, finding land in Illinois on the cheap, and procuring services to automate the whole process from design, assembly, delivery, and finally installation. Im trying to find “Off the Grid” land in Illinois with no population around it for approximately 5 radial miles. This being rare I may need to employ a real estate agent or researcher of some kind in my project plan. Any tips or pointers on how to find suitable construction property in Illinois, dwelling concepts, and services for research and full scale project automation? I may go the custom design route and submit my modification schematics to a supplier for tweaking. Alibaba has lots of providers that do this on the cheap. Good luck on your project, you can do amazing things with these modulars…make a LeCorbusier masterpiece for next to nothing

Hello I too live in Illinois and would love to get away from this day to day bullshit that this govt has mad us call our life and if you are truely serious about this i could help establish such a place I’m currently a firefighter but I’m pretty young so my financial contributions would be slim but I could help you find the tools you need to start this project just tell me what you would be willing to spend on land and other essentials

Hello. I have several articles on my blog that might interest you.

    http://larrydgray.wordpress.com/2011/07/03/metal-buildings-kits-and-home-made/

I talk about an Idea that I have using two or 4 containers. I also explain how a roof frame can be designed to hold up an earth roof. Though I’d have an engineer check this before implementation.

A great way to do modular with log cabin is square log cabin, dog trot style. I talk a little about that in.

I’d use cross tie wood. 7″x9″x10 feet. I’d use lap joints on corners and for extending walls. I might fake chinking. Dog trot could be done with containers as well. There are so many ways to make containers into homes I’d love to try them all. I mean in arrangement. You could even have passive solar with containers. One side of a container could have a green house attached and function as a trome wall. The opposite side to the north would be bermed.

I guess you guys have seen http://freecabinporn.com ***Not Porn**** but pictures of cabins from around the world.

LOL…CabinPorn. Sound like InfoPorn or Chart Porn. Well anyways those are neat links thanks for the supplements. Well Found lots of modulars, pods, inflatables, domes, etc that can easily be acquired within the $5000 to $10000 range.Just PLOP em right down on the land. Thanks Mbarrow…Id love to collaborate with you. Thinking of starting a WIKI to collaborate as well. As far as as finances, yah Im pretty much in the same boat, trying to so something very frugal with low cost materials to get the most bang out of the buck. Probably looking to expend from $5000 to $15000 on whole project total give or take. I think this property is rare but can be located through some of the sources Ive consulated. Then theres always renting, leasing hunting property, etc. Do you have some way I can get in contact with you if youd like to chat about some stuff like this. Cool. Talk to you later.
