We are looking for people who have the skills and the resources and want to make the move from their existing lives inside mainstream society, leave their jobs and their mortgages and their high-spending consumer habits, and move to a low-stress, low-consumption life off the grid.

Of course there will still be a need for at least some to work and make money, still a need to generate power, wash, cook, have shelter. But we want to show the world all these things are possible in total comfort, with no stress, off the grid, if you arrange yourself cleverly.

There are many reasons why I have been trying to make a film or a web series about people who are making the move to live off-grid. The first is that the masses of material on TV at the moment never seems to reflect real people and their real lives.

The second is there is a huge pent-up demand for knowledge about this life, and successful examples of how to do it. Right now I get about 10 emails a day from people who are saying they have had enough of their lives inside mainstream society but do not know how to get out.

I want folks to watch my film and think “I can do that. |I am going to do that.”

Please help us. Please join us.

In the first instance please write to nick@off-grid.net, or even better SKYPE me at OFFGRIDNICK, so we can chat through WHEN you could move, WHERE you live, WHY you want to move off-grid and WHAT kind of skills you are offering.

I hope to hear from you soon.

you can see an old film I made last year when I first started raising the money to make this film: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/off-grid/off-the-grid-and-on-the-cloud

  1. I’m interest in living in Alaska of the land or is it off the grid same think. So how would a person figure it out and who would they get into contact with to help me learn to survive in that way of live

  2. My family and I are evacuating the west coast (san diego) with about 100k and headed towards an off the grid lifestyle with our 4 month old son. We are currently looking at rochester NY because of an organic farming opportunity – wherever we go we want to be able to provide enough food for a small community and have sustainable housing. We’ve been doing a lot of research, but still not sure how far 100k is going to get us with out help/people/investors etc. Anyone interested in joining forces feel free to reach out mscrosse@gmail(dot)com

  3. Our names are Evan and Sean. We are two brothers that are actually Eagle scouts. We have lived in the wild before and have many different stories to tell. By me and him being Eagle scouts we know how to live with very little and know how to survive harsh weather. We are up for any challenge and would love this opportunity.

    Thanks

  4. It’s me again, wanting to just keep my name in front of you. I really have the perfect set up to make into an off-grid dream home. I even have a lake that has fish in it. Please consider choosing me. I have worked hard all my life and my only dream is to live off-grid and with a few shelter dogs. Please help.

  5. We’re planning a move to off the grid as soon as our finances are in order. I’m still paying off loans at this point or we’d be diving in right now.

  6. Eilene from tiny houses. my name is Rick and I’m a city kid with a country background. I have done my research on tiny homes and have always wanted to have one for myself. Of course being quite young and having little funds, I’d have to purchase the D.I.Y plans and of course there is the ownership of the land to consider. If we could get enough people to live in these tiny houses on a piece of land with animals, water, farming and solar. I really think it could work. It by-passes building codes anyway. We could at least sell food and products at farmers markets to pay for the property taxes and other minimal expenses. maybe I’m just a hopeless dreamer with more hope than most, but if we could really come together like a commune we could be truly happy. Contact me anyone who wants to discusss this more and so glad other people think in regards to simpler living.

  7. It is so nice to see that there are many others that have a drive to get away from mainstream consumerism. My husband, I and our two boys are in the process of searching for land in MI upper peninsula to go off the grid. We have wanted to do this since we were married almost 13 years ago. We decided that we need to do it now or it will never happen. The only problem we are coming across is the building code requirements. We are planning on building a cord wood home ourselves. We do not want indoor plumbing and only plan to have minimal power. But, when reading building codes it seems no matter where in the upper peninsula we look, it is a requirement to have a septic tank, certain wattage of power, and indoor plumbing in order to get an occupancy permit. Even though they still allow for newly put in outhouses. We have worked hard at saving to purchase the land and paying off out debt. Now the only obstacle that stands in our way is finding that piece of land that will allow us to live the life we want.

  11. Hi I am interested in getting off the Grid, I am free to move next yr, and want to find a piece of land and a Static Caravan, so that I can build my own solar and water generated Earth home. I currently live in the UK at University, on campus, and so have no other commitments. My boys are adults and live independently in other parts of the UK.
I have a lot of creative skills, I design and make my own clothes, and create artistic stuff. I am willing to move any where within reason.

  12. Zero house is the home of which is bein sought after beyond all homes. Perfection, easy creation, perfect sustainment from water to gravity feeds to energy, Kevlar glass for protection, perfection. Space self sustaining, efficient, basically the king of self sufficient housing with no building permit needed.

  13. Hello from sunny California! My mom and I have 5 acres of land that I grew up on in Northern California. I’m planning on leaving Southern CAin 2 years and designing my off-grid home myself. I’m a LEED-AP and designer and I have friends who are contractors up north so it should move smoothly. I am in the pre-design process, looking at permits, etc and eventually some financing. Very excited to learn more!!

  14. I already have some land, not much, but enough. It has a small lake on it and it has a trailer home on it that has a generator and a wood stove. I would love to take this property and make it off the gird liveable. I plan for solar power, and water recycling. I have raised my children on my own, I now take care of my elderly mom and it’s her wish that I be prepared for my future. I want my future to be off the grid living. I plan to have a couple of large shelter dogs live with me…my idea of heaven. Won’t you please find it in your heart to help me?

  15. as soon as we sell our 2 properties here we have found the land we want and will be moving. staying in a camper until we get our cabin built and will be going completely off-grid. plans for solar, wind and possible water wheel generated power.

  17. We have been exploring the opportunities to leave our careers and make a move like this. We both are in our early 50’s in medical radiology. We are looking for lake or large river front with acreage in North Carolina or southeastern virginia. I have some family that may want to follow and help periodically now prepare things. I just don’t know where to start with financial planning. I will submit a video, sounds like fun!

  19. I have some land that already has an old trailer home located there on a small pond. Right now it only has a generator and it’s not really “liveable” but with solar panels, water recycling etc, I could turn that into a home to retire to. PLEASE CONSIDER choosing me. This is my dream.

  22. high my name is Chris me my wife and our two boys just moved off-grid. Ironically I am a Steam Plant Mechanic at a big coal fire powerplant. I have recorded some footage of the adventure like building a ram pump from junk i had in the shop and testing with the amount of drop and flow there was avalible on the property we were looking at buying. we are still in the moving prosses and with our first winter approaching quickley getting shelter for us and our junk has been a crazy costly scramble.
I think it would be a privilege to share our adventure with others.
    Thanks, Chris The Off-Grid Gotermight

  23. My wife and I are saving to invest in a property near where we currently live, where we will literally “start from scratch”. We will be living in a camper through our personal construction of our home/retreat. Aside from having a well dug for us, we will be growing our own food, and bartering recycled/upcycled materials to pay the annual taxes (as required by ponzi law), as well as enable us the acquisition of livestock and other materials needed. Let me know.

  25. I too am looking to move off the grid. I’m ready. The only issue that I have right now, is that I have three more years child support to my ex-wife. Before making the transition, I want to guarantee my commitment to my son.

I’ve got ideas to purchase a piece of land somewhere in Minnesota and begin the transformation to a self-sufficient lifestyle.

I’ve got dozens of projects mapped out that can be documented and featured in the episodes, if someone is willing to back the project.

We, thats Cliff and me, have just bought a log cabin in an acre of land in Devon. Its got a bore hole and a plentiful supply of wood in the surrounding woodlands. We just need to get the electricity sorted out tho’ we have very little money left now. We left our jobs and re-located to North Devon. It would be very good to connect with others trying to live sustainably in our area.We want to convert a couple of little outbuildings to off-grid retreat/hol spaces to bring in a modest income. It’s a new venture for us. We’ve been wwooffing for 18 months looking for our place. Into permaculture. Be happy to commnicate
