London Mayor – from hogwash to greenwash

Boris - don't believe a word this man says

London’s chatterbox Mayor, Boris Johnson has announced he will run for a second term, but he will have a disappointed electorate to deal with.  Boris has failed to make an impact on London life in anything except PR coverage.  His most lasting memorial will be the stone ping-pong tables erected in many of London’s parks.

Others will comment on his failures in housing, transport and business. This web site was excited by his promise, when he was running for office, that he would “take London off grid.”

Indeed there were plans already afoot to do just that, (more…)

Big Power’s green energy scam blocked
by ALEXBENADY on FEBRUARY 11, 2010 - 1 Comment in ENERGY

Good Energy's Davenport

The UK power regulator Ofgem has launched a scheme aiming to stop big power companies ripping off customers with ‘scam’ green energy tariffs that do little or nothing to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Ofgem’s  ‘green certified’ label will only be granted to green electricity tariffs that have genuine environmental benefits. This is expected to exclude several “green” tariffs offered by major power companies (although at launch all the major power companies’ green energy schemes were still included).

For the first time green energy suppliers will have to prove to an independent panel of experts that their energy tariffs result in a reduction of a minimum threshold of carbon dioxide emissions. (more…)

EDF:“Biggest greenwash in corporate history”

Union Hijack says Ecotricity

French energy company EDF has been accused of stealing the idea of a green Union Jack by a tiny eco-power company. The nuclear giant is using the logo to launch its first Green Britain day. So is EDF’s Green Day a laudable attempt at social responsibility, cynical corporate green-wash or just plain old theft?

For the past month French-owned energy company EDF has bombarded British consumers with images of British cultural icons dyed green to promote the first Green Britiain Day.

Despite the fact that only a tiny fraction of its own energy is generated from renewable sources, the company describes the event as a “landmark national initiative to help people reduce Great Britain’s carbon footprint by 2012.” (more…)

Dumb idea
by NICK ROSEN on MAY 18, 2009 - 0 Comments in PEOPLE

Rerev boss in his low-carbon shirt AP reports that the campus gym at the University of Oregon has installed dynamos on each of its running machines, to generate electric power. But the twittish academics freely admit the idea is not cost-effective. Its a classic example of Greenwash – pointless eco-activity where the embodied energy in the dynamos is probably double the carbon that will ever be saved.
The deal with ReRev of Florida is the latest in a growing number of college campuses and exercise clubs across the country where workouts produce watts. (more…)

Diary of a Greenwash coup

We hope she was well paid
This week saw Gossip Girl star Kelly Rutherford continuing to plug lighting products from Osram Sylvania with the switching on of their CFL-lit tree in a tacky New York office (pictured). What is going on behind the scenes in the PR department to make an event like this happen?

In recent years, the compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) has become associated with all things environmentally conscious. This generalization can also be a curse because concerns that plagued early versions of the bulb become associated with the new product.

When it came time for lighting supplier Osram Sylvania to launch its new micro-mini Twist, the world’s smallest CFL, it enlisted the help of Weber Shandwick’s global strategic media group to make sure it got its greenie points across. (more…)

Reclaiming “Green”
by NICK ROSEN on DECEMBER 2, 2008 - 2 Comments in EVENTS

Guest writer Keith Farnish takes up the cudgels to support the word “Green” in an ongoing debate over whether the word is now so over-used its meaningless.

Farnish: Green not Brown
I don’t believe for a moment that the corporate world will let go of the word “green” without a fight, and I certainly have some sympathy with Nick in turning to our old friend “brown” – good old earthy brown, compost brown, manure brown, bark brown – but while brown is a colour you are far more likely to find in a woodland than in a shopping mall, it is not the only colour of life.

In fact life has a host of different colours: the vivid reds that signify the fruits of autumn and the segment of sun as it disappears over the horizon; the warm oranges of so many flowers, pebbles and leaves; (more…)

Brown is the new Green

Hannah:her hands are clean
“I can’t stand the word “green,” says actress and biofuel campaigner Daryl Hannah. And she’s not the only one. All over the environmental movement we’ re sick of Greenwash, and we’re not going to take it any more.

“It’s become a pedantic, smug, judgmental word that is unrelated to the rest of one’s life,” she tells The Guardian newspaper. The word ‘green’ “is being so overused as a marketing tool that it has no credibility,” says Hannah.

She is right, of course. Advertising people love the word Green – they have rendered it almost meaningless – reduced it to a mix of lifestyle choices, expensive organic whimsies, unaffordable building codes and ridiculous gadgets such as an over-designed composter for your marble kitchen counter-top.

Their shade of Green is the color of Astroturf – synthetic, ugly and potentially damaging. (more…)

Universal Studios greenwash

Universal: dirty, polluting scoundrels
What a load of greenwash!

Universal studios are part of the greedy and wasteful Hollywood system.

So it is monumental hypocrisy to see them launching a solar powered golf cart.

These are the buggies that whisk the rich and powerful around the vast studio lots in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Its great for their lard-assed studio execs, who can feel good about themselves as they ride about the studio lot, swilling bottled water and snorting cocaine flecked with the blood of Columbian workers, and grown in the ruins of the rainforests. Sheryl Crow’s green baby shower

Sheryl Crow
Don’t shake her hand

Rocker Sheryl Crow whose inconvenient truth is that she wants to limit the use of toilet paper to one sheet per visit to save the environment, has notched another first in her crusade against global warming.

Whilst promoting her Stop Global Warming College Tour, an 11-date tour explaining the perils of global warming to Americans, Ms Crow has just thrown an eco-baby shower for her son Wyatt.

Yup. An eco-baby shower.

The green gala is featured in the November issue of InStyle magazine, although the magazine has not stated how much was paid for the exclusive photos.

The barf-inducing event was planned (more…)
