Daryl Hannah tells Abu Dhabi about going off the grid
by SPY_VONDEGA on APRIL 11, 2013 - 5 Comments in PEOPLE

daryl hannahThe Kill Bill star has two off-grid homes, one in Colorado and one in California. She was recently in Abu Dhabi as a guest of the world’s leading hoteliers, where she shared her philosophies on living a sustainable lifestyle.
Being green does not mean you have to cut down on opulence, Hannah said at the eco-travel event they all jetted in for: “It depends what your concept of luxury and lavish is. I consider my home incredibly comfortable and incredibly luxurious in terms of its appointments. (Being sustainable) it doesn’t mean it’s hideous.” Its not clear whether means her Colorado home, near Telluride, or her Santa Cruz home which she refers to elsewhere as a “misfit circus.”
Hannah says she does not have “19 bathrooms with gold faucets” . .(does anyone outside of the Saudi royal family?) (more…)

Mouthy - Hannah raps the climateers

Film star Daryl Hannah is at the climate change summit in Mexico. So far she has criticised the conference center where the air conditioning was on high, despite it was 70 degrees outside – “a perfect temperature.”

She also condemned US Energy Secretary Steven Chu for proposing “nothing concrete”in his keynote speech.
“We need to decentralise the energy system, our food and agriculture system,” she said.  “The only way change happens is from the ground up, not the top down. Most politicians dont have the courage,” she said. (more…)

Daryl - on a mission

Daryl Hannah is on a world tour raising awareness of The Green Wave and the loss of biodiversity in the International Year of Biodiversity.

First holiday memory?
Going to summer camp in the Rockies where all the kids lived in covered wagons for two months. We would set up tents, dig latrines, make fires and groom and ride horses. I grew up on the 42nd storey of an apartment block in downtown Chicago, so I think camp was when I first really connected with nature.
Best hotel?
The Al Karm Ecolodge in Sinai, Egypt. The site dates back to the 13th century and is very basic. I also really liked the Hotelito Desconocido in Mexico that was completely off the grid. I like to stay in off-grid places.

Hannah: two homes off grid

Hollywood icon Daryl Hannah is already a poster girl for the off-grid revolution. The interview she gave in 2005 made her Colorado staging post the world’s most famous off-grid address.

Now Hannah has revealed she has a second off the grid property, this one in California.

Hannah told an obscure Santa Cruz community TV station that she lives  in a solar-powered Southern California farm she refers to as “misfit circus,” home to abandoned and disabled animals.

She arrived at the studio in her 1979 Pontiac Trans Am she drove in ‘Kill Bill.’ The actress and environmental activist appeared live with local ecologist David Blume on Community TV’s live call-in show “Eco-Review” to promote ethanol as an alternative energy source.

Here is footage of Hannah showing us round her protest tent at The Farm. (more…)

daryl_hannahMany stars are termed “eco-celebrity,” but few have taken their commitments as seriously as Daryl Hannah.

Showtime TV vs Daryl Hannah

daryl_hannahProducers from a spoof series on Showtime TV tried to trick Daryl Hannah into making herself look ridiculous with a Condor.  Little Duke Productions (probably a pseudonym), managed to lure  Daryl all the way out to a remote location in California where she was supposed to “release a Condor into the wild.’

She became suspicious when she spotted a crew of 15 (for a nature show?) and was asked to sign a release form permitting hidden cameras; and even more suspicious when the Director told her he had been fed by Condors after becoming stranded in the wild for three days (more…)

Brown is the new Green

Hannah:her hands are clean
“I can’t stand the word “green,” says actress and biofuel campaigner Daryl Hannah. And she’s not the only one. All over the environmental movement we’ re sick of Greenwash, and we’re not going to take it any more.

“It’s become a pedantic, smug, judgmental word that is unrelated to the rest of one’s life,” she tells The Guardian newspaper. The word ‘green’ “is being so overused as a marketing tool that it has no credibility,” says Hannah.

She is right, of course. Advertising people love the word Green – they have rendered it almost meaningless – reduced it to a mix of lifestyle choices, expensive organic whimsies, unaffordable building codes and ridiculous gadgets such as an over-designed composter for your marble kitchen counter-top.

Their shade of Green is the color of Astroturf – synthetic, ugly and potentially damaging. (more…)
