Living off grid in Alaska
by A1SHIVA on AUGUST 5, 2014 - 5 Comments in I AM OFF GRID AND I WANT OTHERS TO JOIN ME

Room and board in exchange for help in Alaska.

Looking again. Did this last fall and worked out pretty well but they moved to Anchorage for job training. Had lots of interest last fall. Keep in mind this is rustic Alaska living and winter is coming. There is still time to build a small cabin with materials on site or live in an old camp trailer I own down by the creek. Either way will take work getting ready for winter. J

I need some help with all kinds of things. Getting firewood, insulating and finishing my shop, putting tools etc where they belong, maybe build a cabin or two, getting some things ready to sell and selling them, vehicle and equipment repair and much more.

I live off grid and pretty rough but enjoy it as it is nice and simple so if you would like to try living out in the woods away from city lights this might be for you. I am not looking for a roommate so you would be living in your own shack with wood heat. Definitely nothing fancy but a place to sleep, cook and kick back enjoying the view. Lots of trails and old mining areas to explore. Hunting and fishing in the area if that is your thing. I do have toys that can be used to go play in the woods.

This is not a 8 to 5 type thing. I rarely do mornings as I enjoy sitting around watching the sun come up while making breakfast and catching up on my email etc. I like to work when I feel like it and do something else if I don’t. I have a couple of dogs that do not play well with others or even themselves now and then.

What I am looking for in you:
Won’t steal from me.
OK with not running into town all the time unless you have your own transportation as I run in about once a month in the winter for supplies and maybe once a week in the summer if I need something.
Won’t continually bother me when I am kicking back especially in the mornings. I moved out into the woods to get away from annoying things. I enjoy talking to people but enjoy not talking to them more.
Willing to work hard with me one day and take it easy the next or work on your own.
Someone who is into gardening and a greenhouse would be nice
No drugs

I do not care what sex you are, gay, lesbian, have purple hair and enough metal piercings that you have to use a large inner tube when swimming so you do not sink or how old you are or aren’t as long as you can keep up or stay ahead of me.
If you smoke it is on your own dime and not around me.
You do not need to know how to do everything as long as you are willing to learn I can show you how to do it.

I am not looking for a girlfriend or a boyfriend for that matter. It would be nice if we got along or even became friends if we are going to spend time together.

I do not have a lot of extra money floating around as I keep spending it on building materials but I will keep you from starving and try to help out with some of the other little things a person always needs. I will give you a share of some of the things that you help fix that I want to sell so you can make a little money. It would be something we would have to talk about.

Not sure if this is the way go but thought I would give it a try again. If you just want a break from the hectic and noisy city life while trying to figure out whats next in your life this might be for you. If you are wanting to learn new skills like carpentry, mechanics, operating equipment, how to build a cabin, how to live off grid this might be for you. Long or short term depending on on how we get along. More than willing to help you find your own place to do your own thing if that’s what you want once you get the hang of off gridding in Alaska. If you have been worried about taking that first step to off grid living this might be the safety net to get you started.

For fun I explore with the atvs, snowmobiles and go for road trips all over the state. You might get to see a little more of Alaska now and then. I spend some time down in the Healy area at a little cabin that I am also working on but this is in the Fairbanks Delta Junction area of Alaska. I have lived in Alaska for almost 60 years and offgrid for 8 years so am starting to get the hang of it.

Looking to live a simpler life..
by MATTM21 on AUGUST 1, 2014 - 3 Comments in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

I am a 22 year old male who lives in eastern Massachusetts who wants to move off the grid. Although the modern world has given us a lot of technology I don’t think that people are any happier then they were in the past. In fact, I believe that putting in some hard work and effort actually makes people happy. In my opinion, true happiness is being self-sustainable and not having many material possession. True happiness to me is relying on myself or others that have similar views and not expecting the government to give me a handout. I want to grow my own crops, collect my own water, and I want to live in a small house with just the basics. I believe that the focus of life should be on love and happiness and not money. Many people are controlled by the media and material possessions these days, but not everyone. I am looking for people who feel the same way, and I can tell there are a lot of you out there because of this site. If I had the chance I would move off the grid today. I have made some mistakes though such as taking out loans for college that I have to repay. If you are willing to work with me or help me with this one issue I am willing to offer a lifetime of hard labor and work as well as my friendship. I hope to hear from some of your soon. Permaculture family looking for additional help on 12 acres
by DREAMERSPRESERVATION.COM on JULY 26, 2014 - 6 Comments in I AM OFF GRID AND I WANT OTHERS TO JOIN ME

Hello,
A little about what we are looking for and what we are offering. We are starting with a house that needs alot of work and 12 acres. The redesign of the house will include a greenhouse, and the existing house will have all plumbing rerouted to a greywater system in the green house. Also in the greenhouse will be a 5 extralarge worm bins, 5 275 gallon fish tanks, and many plants.

In the early spring we will build 3 cabins for overnight guests. One will be earth bag, one strawbale, one earthintegrated. These will be designed using everything I have learned and am learning on permaculture. We hope to get the first pond in yet this year as well as hugaculture beds and get a huge fall and winter crop. We will also be canning this fall.

Now we also play boardgames, and watch movies. Trips to museums if there are children. A swimming pool, cooking on the fire, sitting around outside watching a movie. Or the stars and chatting stuff like that.

None of us has any family really that we are close to. So it is only natural that we would like a large family like the waltons had. Cousins, kin, what ever the word you use we would like to find a few more members. Work is required but not money. We will be getting off grid and growing our own food within a year.

We are only human and we have our quirks. Some good some bad but were all good people. So now tell us about what you are looking for in a community? What are your goals? How do you feel about pets and animals? When are you looking to join a community?

You should be willing to help with the move from our current place to the new place. Labor only, you would get your own room, bed, furniture etc. Meals and a chance to help build a permaculture paradise. Did we mention family? No not call me Sissy or Mom but a sense of belonging and mattering. Please no preaching or people looking to save others. Your religion is your business as mine is mine. However we do celebrate Yule/ Christmas but without religous overtones. Call 620 314 7134. We are moving from Kansas to MO. We would like to find someone to join us now.

Looking to join/start community -Upstate NY-
by DUCKDUCKMEESE on JULY 24, 2014 - 1 Comment in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

Hey, my name’s TJ and I live in Upstate NY. I’m a 21 year-old man looking to start or join an off-the-grid community/homestead with kind, honest people. I’m discouraged with the selfish, greedy state of consumerist living that unfortunately we as a society find ourselves in. I wholeheartedly believe in the DIY ethos and the reward of self-sufficiency and hard work. I’m not much of a religious person, but I have no problems with people who are- as long as they reciprocate the same respect in my beliefs as I do in theirs. I’m an avid angler with experience in many forms of fishing (rod/angling, handline fishing, net, and noodling) and have experience in horticulture. I’ve been composting and growing veggies for over 10 years, with confidence in helping to sow larger scale gardens. I have the utmost respect for nature and animals, only ever hunting twice in my life strictly for sustenance and never for sport. Raising livestock for food and resources is more humane than the torment animals go through in factory farms, so I’m down to raise/care for animals. I have some minor skills in carpentry, more-so in wood crafting than large-scale building. I’m a very open-minded person however I have no tolerance for racism, xenophobia, sexism, or any form of bigotry. I’m not a druggie and never was much of a drinker, but I’m okay with both to an extent; the extent being as long as it doesn’t jeopardize an established homestead and cause unnecessary problems. Physically, I’m 6’0 even and a solid 207 pounds more than capable of putting in my fair share of hard labor. To wrap this up, in my free-time I enjoy cooking, fishing, camping, hiking, amateur geographical mapping, and whittling. I’m pretty much a big ‘ole nerd for survivalist & DIY stuff and I dream of just being apart of a separate self-sufficient community that helps looks out for each other and holds a legitimate sense of camaraderie.

I Need To Leave
by SHEPPIE on JULY 17, 2014 - 21 Comments in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

Hi, my name’s Aaron, I’m 22 and I’m a guy.
I’ve lived in Maryland my entire life and I need to leave. I need to live somewhere where I can do things that actually matter. Like grow/harvest food, maintain a place to live, supply my own water, and connect with people who just want to live life for what it is. I can’t put up with this backwards “economy” and doing/buying things that just don’t matter or aid to help me progress as a human. I know there’s so much more to living than to make money, owe money, and give all that money to corporations. I want to connect with people on a real level. I’d like to one day get out of America.
SO what I’d like to is to join a community, or even start a community with a bunch of people, but a community that’s “modern.” But I’m willing to think about any offer that someone shows me. And I’ll move anywhere that’s possible for me to reach. I just really want to leave this mundane lifestyle.
