looking at going off-grid in British Columbia
by CHRIS CANNON on JULY 2, 2014 - 1 Comment in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

Vancouver writer looking to learn everything i can about off-grid living for some magazine and tv work i am doing, but also out of curiosity and a desire to be part of a sustainable community. I prefer the witty, kind, and sane over the dull, angry, and loopy. Please move on if you respect the Kardashians or make your dog wear goggles.

At this point, i am just trying to scout out the local, off-grid community and see what i can learn. Possible move in the future — interior, the sunshine coast, or on one of the islands perhaps.

I’m a college prof, a rock critic, an author, a former US Marine Sergeant, and a friend to animals. My wife is a baker and a model. Our cat does not have a job.

Looking to transition soon!
by SENSI on JULY 2, 2014 - 1 Comment in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

I’ve been educating myself on Earthbag and SuperAdobe construction methods. With these hand-made buildings, a cheap parcel of remote land and the help of a handful of like-minded people, a new village may take root. I’m ready to begin the transition over the next year(2011). I have put together a plan to make the transition but it relies heavily on other people who wish to do the same. By pooling manpower, a little money and time, I want to create a satellite village which helps others into this lifestyle. By taking part in the village, people will learn DIY home building, permaculture gardening, and various other off-grid skills and information. Think of it as an introduction where people could spend days, months, weeks or even years learning these ways before setting out on their own. It’s not about money and it should never come to that. Sure it will still be useful in some circumstances but the idea is to be free of such pursuits, stop trading our time, our labor and our lives for money and start living what life we have left to enjoy.
The transition will not be easy and is expected to take place over several years with the first stage being the development of the land with little more than camping accommodations. As Earthbag structures and various support systems like septic begin to take form, the village will become more of a weekend retreat, trading lodging, information and hospitality for labor. When someone truly puts their heart into something; their resourcefulness knows no bounds. And that is the strength behind a project like this. Everyone who becomes involved will have done so because their heart told them it was the right thing to do.

A 7 minute video with Neil and Hwei-Ying who settled in Fiji for an off-grid lifestyle after dropping out and living on a boat for 5 years. They grow most of their own food and enjoy island life and their friendship with the locals around them.

Advice on how to get started?
by TOPAZETA on JULY 2, 2014 - 1 Comment in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

I’m 27 years old and live in London. I moved here 10 years ago from a small coastal town in South Africa to save enough money to buy land in either the UK or South America and start a small community – since my early teens this was always the plan. I’ve read tons of books on self sufficient living, grow my own food and have over the years found ways to live only on the basics but I’m not sure where to go from here.

So why off grid? I’m a sensitive person and value love and sharing above all else but have for a while tried to fake apathy and buy into all the crap that has only made me ill. Like Krishamurti said ‘we have to be sick to be well-adjusted’ but I can no longer make this compromise and hope to meet others who feel the same way. I’d like to remove myself completely, live as simply as possible and one day start a small animal sanctuary on the land. I am an animal activist and vegan but like humans too ;)

Thanks for reading,
Lissy

Looking to help with an off the grid community
by TINA on JULY 2, 2014 - 0 Comments in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

I am originally from a small town in upstate NY and am currently living in New York City and going to school for Interior Architecture. I have a fascination with building spaces and atmospheres and am a very creative and artistic person. I’ve recently realized that I can no longer be apart of this capitalistic society and am looking for something greater than myself. I applied to The Earthship Academy but I was denied because I am not yet 21. I do not think I can stay in school anymore to wait around until I am 21 – it is beginning to drain me. This could be due to all the theoretical projects and lack of meaning and hands on experience. It is all very money based and I am far from that. I am a very hard worker and am willing to do what ever it takes to be able to live a self-sustainable life. Sense of community is important to me and I am looking for one where we can all work together to achieve something amazing. I do not know much about sustainable building, or growing (although I have worked on an organic farm once) – but I am really ready to learn! So if anyone needs an extra hand and is willing to work with an open minded, and creative person – I can help you out!

:)
P.S. that’s me on the left – I know visuals help people out sometimes!

Names Brian, I am a 23 year old light skin dominican fella that lives in the suburbs of the North-east (Tri-state) looking to live off the grid within the next 2 years..i have 2 semesters left of college, I might as well finish. But Im sick of this society and how the economy runs everything. So much Greed, War, and Hate. I believe that this world is in for a huge change very soon and I just want to be ready. I need to get in contact with the right people who can help get me started and lead me in the right direction towards pursuing this goal. Im all about peace love and fairness. Real easy to get along with and i’m looking to take the next step. I eat very little amount of meat, id rather be a vegetarian love rice n beans and all veggies really..and would like live in a community that grows their own food and has a fresh water source. very important. Im just about fed up with the unnecessary pressures from our society. Need to be in touch with nature and communal living . Thanks for reading this and for future support.

Must be able to recieve an internet/cell signal (whatever the wireless stuff is) no restriction on building, animals or clearing.

Looking for people who would like to go off the grid (would like to spend 2 years on planning everything out)
by VALPAL on JULY 2, 2014 - 1 Comment in I WANT TO GO OFF GRID

Hello, my name is Val I’m from New York City. I’m looking for people here in New York who would like to go off the grid within the next 2 years. It’s been very hard to find anyone especially in this huge busy city. I’m very much into solar power, wind power, hyro-power, gardening/farming, primitive living, and many more but sadly I’m very limited to what I can do since I live in a building with no back yard or anything . Every morning that I get up for work I feel as if I don’t belong into this society, my heart isn’t made for this concrete jungle. I’ve felt like this for many years and I think I need to do this for myself. I know its a lot of hard work but I see myself enjoying it and waking up every morning taking that first morning breath of fresh clean air stepping on to the grass covered with dew, oh man lol I see it all! I do not have a car so if your within the tri-state area that’ll be wonderful. If not maybe we can arrange something. I’m looking to take 2 years or so of organized planning before I/we make a move. I like things to go smoothly and know what ill do before I do it. Also any advice would be great, I’m new to the site and love stories =].

P.S.- I always reply back
