One of the biggest dangers to the grid is bothering the British Secretary of Defense Liam Fox. Today he warns that the electricity grid, financial networks and transport infrastructure could be paralyzed by a solar flare.
Fox is no fringe lunatic. He used to be a medical practioner.
There is a growing threat of electromagnetic disruption to the underpinnings of modern life, the Defense Secretary told a meeting of scientists and security advisers today.
Dr. Fox said he wants to address the “vulnerabilities” in the nation’s hi-tech infrastructure.
“As the nature of our technology becomes more complex, the threat becomes more widespread as well,” he says. (more…)
Electronics company SANYO has finally launched its most powerful solar cells to date – claiming a 21.1% efficiency with a module output of 235W. Shipping of this new module will commence across Europe from this month.
The much-hyped cells were announced months ago but are only now available to consumers, enhancing performance and value in limited space installations.
But be warned, the modules themselves only claim efficiency of of 18.6% – and it is the modules you will be buying, not the cells on their own. (more…)
Within a year, the US Army will release a list of five candidate installations for conversion to net-zero status. As part of the preparations, four army homes at Fort Bliss base in Texas will be taken totally off the grid, powered by solar, while the military families living in them will keep a diary of how their behavor was affected.
Power consumption at Fort Bliss has dropped by three megawatts, and the post is looking to shed even more in its quest to become a “net zero” energy installation (see video below). (more…)
New Jersey is the sunniest state in America, offering solar energy incentives for residential systems that can pay for themselves in as little as three years.
The state is second only to California in the number of homes outfitted with solar technology, drawing so many applicants for generous rebates in May that the Board of Public Utilities has put new requests on hold.
New Jersey is the only state to mandate a Solar Alternative Compliance Payment, essentially a penalty a utility must pay if the company does not reach its SREC target. To make that goal, utilities buy these green-energy credits from consumers and businesses. (more…)
A zero-emission and self-powering building to be driven by solar-powered hydrogen energy is planned for
Griffith University in Australia. Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Ned Pankhurst described the $33 million teaching and research building, due for completion in 2012, as a showcase for “breakthrough technology”. (more…)
First the good news. Solar power could account for nearly a quarter of the world’s electricity by 2050 according to two reports issued this week by the International Energy Agency.
The bad news is that the overwhelming bulk of that electricity will be produced by large centralised power plants. Off-grid solar photovoltaic electricity, though important in remote areas and developing countries, will account for little more than one per cent of global electricity production predicts the IEA. Here is an example of how to make the best use of the home you have – however un-eco it was to start with.
Pete Vigs has slashed his family’s energy use by converting to a net-zero solar powered home that uses no oil or gas.
His 4 part video (click keep reading to see it) shows all the changes he’s made, three years into a 10 year peak oil preparedness plan. To his surprise, his life is now better while using much less energy and having less impact on the environment. (more…)
A sunspace can make a dark room into a bright living space. It is also a source of solar heating for your home and a place to garden all year round.
A sunspace is usually a light-frame enclosure made of glass or other transparent glazing, aluminum or wood framing, windows, skylights and sliding glass doors. Also known as conservatory, greenhouse, solarium, or sunroom.
Pre-engineered sunspace kits (such as this one) are available in a variety of sizes and styles but be careful to find one which specifically aims to enhance the solar heating capacity if that is what you are after. (more…)

Off-Grid.net is investigating the Utility companies --power, water and waste.
Do the water companies conceal their knowledge of the pollution of the water supply? Do the power companies conceal the wasted energy inside the system, and their excessive profits?
We need help to find the smoking guns: memos, SEC filings, confidential legal advice internal emails..... send to news@off-grid.net. Anonymity guaranteed
Do you rely on your own healing powers when you are ill? Or is there an unqualified nurse in your local community?
We want to hear from people who do their own doctoring - using their own herbs and remedies, setting their own broken bones, dealing with their own bodies.
Why do you do it? How do you do it? Contact news@off-grid.net
We are preparing a TV series for possible broadcast next year. Can you write up your experiences ? Or handle a video camera?
We are looking for people who currently live off-grid anywhere in the world, and for people who want to live off-grid but do not yet do so. This might be in a community or an individual situation. Please send us your videos and photos - or feel free to write about yourself for the web site. Contact nick@off-grid.net
