This site is dedicated to showing how you can live off the grid in comfort and style without costing the earth. Lighting is fairly crucial part of that. Being able to snap on the light when you come home is just as important to off-gridders as to those who are grid-connected.
Light is expensive, energy-hungry, and vital to our happiness – especially at this time of year. And there is a large degree of unanimity amongst off-gridders about what makes good lighting and how to achieve it.
When you live off-grid, electric lighting is not something you can take for granted. The means for controlling natural and artificial light and thus achieving visual comfort are not as well-established in the Unplugged community. But the off-grid aesthetic is now spreading to the plugged-in community.
So how do off-gridders light their homes to maximise the gain and minimise the cost? (more…)
Actor Woody Harrelson is planning to raise money for Prairie Paper Ventures Inc. a private company he started 15 years back.
Prairie Paper makes its paper using a different mix of material from normal: 80% of the inputs come from wheat straw and the rest from recycled fibre. The paper is known as Step Forward Paper. It’s available on Amazon US, and at Staples, Lyreco and Basics.
In a posting on its website, “Out of the Furnace” star Harrelson, who is holding up a box of paper, said “it’s good for the forests, it’s good for the farmers and it’s good for our future.”
The company’s tree-free paper is produced in India – because no ecomill is available in North America and Europe. The ultimate goal is to “build a 100% tree-free, off-the-grid, eco-friendly, chlorine-free mill on the Prairies where millions of tonnes of leftover wheat straw is readily available,” said Christina Marshall, director of marketing. Food producers Cynthia Lim and Nick Bray have cracked the big problem – how do you go off the grid and still make a living in the real world? The couple moved to a 7 hectare property outside Melbourne Australia 12 years ago.
Some might have considered turning land over to cannabis cultivation – but not in Australia where cops act more like the Secret Service. Their answer: growing and selling blueberries.
They started with about 200 plants in 2004, just in time for the ‘‘drought of the century’’. But that ordeal has served them well.
‘‘We just thought we would give it a go and then the drought came along,’’ Ms Lim said. (more…)
We had a very pretty day yesterday, it was one of those rare days that was cold but not so bitter that you didn’t want to go out. My friend and I had to go into town in the morning, it had been foggy, windy and cold overnight, we didn’t know what to expect in the morning, there was a chance we couldn’t go into town. We woke up to this sight, a winter wonderland of ice crystals that had grown on the windward side, growing in furry spiky delicate ice crystals. (more…)
There are a lot of reasons that sensible people want to step off of the materialistic rocket ride that is the standard North American Christmas. Maybe they don’t want to create children who are never satisfied and always want more, who always yearn for that next edition of the iGadget of the year. Perhaps they have suffered their own personal economic collapse and just can’t afford it this year. They might just want a sense of peace and contentment that you can never buy from a store. (more…)
British inventor James Dyson is working on an off-grid toilet design.
One of the most successful Engineer-designers alive today Dyson announced: “One of (my) incubator units is (working on) Loowat, an off-grid, waterless, toilet system that generates biogas for use in the local community.
“It combines a water-less toilet with an anaerobic digester that creates bottled gas for both heating and cooking.”
Dyson understand the importance of community financial support for the development of new ideas and ways of living.
Dyson is motivated by improving society and the way we live. “Great ideas are often spurred on by an obsession to improve things that don’t work properly,” he said.

the famous Niagara falls may be a pubic asset, but the energy it could theoretically produce belongs to the local monopoly
