A new series on Preppers is attracting lots of attention. The series will air on NatGeo but even ABC Nightline just gave it a plug.  Here is the transcript

DOOMSDAY PREPPERS,

BILL WEIR (ABC NEWS)

(OC) People have been predicting the end of the world since the beginning. But this year, doomsday predictions seem to be unusually urgent and widespread. And whether you blame the Mayan calendar or melting ice caps or teetering currencies, tonight we meet a diverse collection of folks who aren’t just sitting around waiting for the worst, they’re getting ready to live through it. Here’s ABC’s David Wright.

GRAPHICS: PREPPING FOR THE APOCALYPSE

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Volcanoes, earthquakes, financial meltdown, come what may, Tim Ralston is ready.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

Freeze-dried food, survival gear, first aid, ammo.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) What do you think is gonna happen?

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

You know, there’s a lot of different things that could happen. For me, I look at prepping is kind of like insurance. You know, you have car insurance, health insurance, life insurance. You have…

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) This is apocalypse insurance.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

This is life assurance.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) The Scottsdale father of two calls himself a prepper, part of a growing movement preparing for the end of the world as we know it.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

In the beginning, my wife really wasn’t on the same page as I was. But the more information I started to give to her, then it opened her eyes to the other potential threats that are out there.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) He’s turned the family’s two car garage into a staging area.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Oh, my gosh, quite a man cave.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

It’s really ready to go.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) So you keep this packed at all times?

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

All times.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) He has cartons of canned chicken with a shelf life of 15 years. Ways to purify even the most polluted water.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

Not bad.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Not bad, it’s sugary.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) And weapons, lots of weapons.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

That’s my son’s actually.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Your son has an AK-47?

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

Of course.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Once a week, Tim takes his sons out to the desert about 30 miles away on a practice run.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

The bad guy is the red guy.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) A dress rehearsal for doomsday.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

Go, go, go, get ‘em, get ‘em. Nice shot.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Eventually, he plans to build an underground shelter here, a converted shipping container, tricked out with everything they’ll need to survive.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

You just never know. I have a lot of other religious friends that say I don’t want to prepare, I’ll just go to heaven. I go, well, do you know what it feels like to starve to death?

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Ralston is one of several people the National Geographic Channel followed for their new series “Doomsday Preppers.” There’s a couple in Texas who have converted school buses into getaway vehicles.

DOOMSDAY PREPPER (TEXAS)

Go, go, go, go, go.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) They live off the grid, filter their own water and store enough canned goods to last 22 people for years. And there’s the New England mom who calls herself the Doris Day of doom.

KATHY HARRISON (PREPPER)

I’m preparing for a black swan event like a catastrophic New Madrid earthquake.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Kathy Harrison doesn’t exactly fit the survivalist stereotype. She isn’t stockpiling weapons. Instead, she keeps bees.

KATHY HARRISON (PREPPER)

In a breakdown situation, those bees become not just food for us but they become honey that we can barter for. Those bees are the essence of resilience for us.

DOOMSDAY PREPPER (NEW ENGLAND)

Honey could become very valuable. It’s one of the only foods that won’t go bad. You can store it forever and ever and ever and ever.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Paranoia is part of the zeitgeist right now.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) So much so that last night during the Super Bowl…

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) …General Motors conjured up this vision of the day after tomorrow, where the only survivors of the apocalypse are these dudes.

ACTOR (COMMERCIAL)

Where’s Dave?

ACTOR (COMMERCIAL)

Dave didn’t drive the longest-lasting, most dependable truck on the road.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) The end of days has the ultimate marketing slogan.

ACTOR (COMMERCIAL)

Twinkie?

ACTOR (COMMERCIAL) (CONTINUED)

Yeah.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) That hell in a hand basket motif seems to be everywhere these days.

CLIP: “PARKS AND RECREATION”

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Even on comedies like “Parks and Recreation.”

AMY POEHLER (ACTRESS)

Herb, what can I do you for?

ACTOR (“PARKS AND RECREATION”)

The world is going to end tomorrow at dawn.

AMY POEHLER (ACTRESS)

Aw, nuts.

ACTOR (“PARKS AND RECREATION”)

The entire planet.

AMY POEHLER (ACTRESS)

Not giving me much notice, Herb, let me see what I can do.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Some fear our downfall will come from our dependence on technology and fossil fuels.

CLIP: “MAD MAX”

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Forcing us back to the Stone Age, “Mad Max” style. Others are convinced the Mayans had it right and that in 2012, just a few months from now, we’ll simply run out of time. Of course, there’s always the ever popular Christian end game, the Rapture. Enough people believe the end is nigh that prepping is now big business. A little over a year ago, we went to the middle of the Mojave Desert to meet Robert Vicino, a real estate developer to end all real estate developers. He’s converting a cold war bunker into a luxury modern shelter.

ROBERT VICINO (FOUNDER OF THE VIVOS GROUP)

That’s Noah’s ark, it just happens to be underground.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Underground condos, fortified against the unthinkable, complete with a hospital and movie theater. Price tag, $50,000 per unit, up front. Long before this one was complete, it was almost sold out. Vicino is also building another shelter in Indiana big enough for 80 people. That one’s further along. Almost complete, also almost sold out.

ROBERT VICINO (FOUNDER OF THE VIVOS GROUP)

We’re looking at doing 20 in China, three in Taiwan, Romania, Russia, everywhere. People are coming at us from everywhere.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Paranoia sells. Some of the doomsday preppers know it too. Tim Ralston doesn’t just stockpile this stuff, he sells it.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(OC) You have like a website or something that people go to?

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

Yeah, we do. It’s called “gear up center.” People can go there and buy anything, order it online.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Prepared for anything and making a profit too.

TIM RALSTON (PREPPER)

All right, boys, let’s go, we’re going on vacation. Come on.

DAVID WRIGHT (ABC NEWS)

(VO) I’m David Wright for “Nightline” in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Wow. If you read the vo and what the commentators say…you can see how words are put into people’s mounts. Ralston says “life assurance” -reporter says “apocalypse insurance” trying to peg him in a negative light. I would rather be in the camp of having some preparations than not.
