Suburbanite looking to go off-grid…eventually

I am a 30-something professional male who would like to go off-grid indefinitely. I am not sure to what extent this would be feasible, as I am currently stuck in the rat-race, and would need to make the transition gradually.

I like the idea of being completely independent, but I’m not too keen on the idea of living in a tent.

I’m looking for advice, guidance, or even references to reputable sustainability resources in the NY Metro area.
