TN OTG Co-Op Community
by CMORRIS4U88 on JULY 29, 2010 - 40 Comments in I WANT TO HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE OFF-GRID

I am in the process of initiating an OTG co-op community in Upper Cumberland Tennessee. I would like to network with others who have already successfully established and OTG home as part of my information gathering phase. Initally this co-op should have a sustainable farm, fishery, and appoximately 40 – 50 home sites.

I have no experience in the areas that you are searching for but I am extremely willing to learn to be 100% sustainable and therefore would love to speak with you about possibly helping you create your commune. Have you looked into the organization WWOOF? It’s a work exchange and I think it could be very beneficial to you as you build your community.

Hello, we are looking to off the grid. Although we do not have something established, I grew up in Wisconsin on a farm. We did not have indoor plumbing and I do know a lot with regards to farming, etc. My husband and I have a lot of knowledge with living off the land, my husband was a camp leader. We are looking to move to Tennessee and live off the grid. Let us know..

Hello!
My husband’s contract with the United States Army is coming to an end this spring and we have long dreamed of living a life, to call our own. We both come from very self reliant families, his building their own cabins, mine gardening and preserving. We have both adopted our families abilities and look to expand our self reliance to becoming completely self reliant. Being military now, this is a complete change! We have two beautiful children and we want them to have the same opportunities we had growing up. to walk on th earth God provided us, not a concrete pathway. Please if you should have room for us within your community, we are passionate and completely in on the idea. We thank you for supportingthe OTGlifestyle and allowing others to get a chance to ” Go back to their roots” sincerely hope we can be a part of you team!Good luck to you and all who you incorporate!!!!!

I grew up in East Tn in a log cabin with woodburning stove. I’m well versed in making simple snares and traps as well as the medicinal properties of plants of that region, as well as their edible parts and how to prepare them so that they are edible. (not to mention how to skin, clean, and prepare small game such as rattlesnake and squirrel) I was schooled by the best baby! Mellungeons! I’m living in chicago now but am desperatley mourning the loss of my connection with nature and divine humanity. I’m young, strong, resilient, resourceful, prudent, and fearless! Please contact me and i’ll jump in the volvowagon and be there yesterday. I’d love to be a part of this.

My husband and I would love to just escape and live off the land. We and several of our friends are dedicated to creating our own community but don’t have the means to start up. Would love to know how you are doing and if you are recruiting families.

Hello!
So glad to know of someone close by who is working toward a similar goal as us! My husband and I have been off grid in Macon County for years and are also working toward both a small co-op community and toward greater resilience for our surrounding community. This is a fledgling effort but here are our two blogs. We’d love to hear from you!

Hello, I have had some experience at OTG living and I must say that 50 homes is almost un-doable. To many conflicting ideas. I would start with no more than 10 people. If that works out you can grow slowly from there. You are correct in wanting to go OTG but it is tuff job to get all the things working with people you can trust and count on. Regards Charles

Myself and a couple others are very much interested in getting off the grid. We’ve been looking into ways to do it for well over a year now. The problem we keep coming across is finding a way to build the eco friendly home the way we want it without violating TN’s many building codes. Unfortunately the building materials required by the state of TN are incredibly expensive and we, like many, are incredibly broke. So how can we get around this I wonder….

I have been trying to get a nonprofit going. I have found i have wasted time and money. People want to sit around and complain but then when given a chance to take part in change for the better involving the very things they are complaining about they don’t want to be bothered. I am interested in learning more about your program. Please email believeininc@gmail.com

I and a friend of mine are playing to go OTG in April 2013. We are looking at Overland Plateau as she has friends who own land there. Is this community in progress already or still in idea stage? I would love to know if we all pitched in money and skills to make this reality how long before it could be in build stage.

32 Kimberley Durham { 02.19.13 at 12:08 am }

Hi, my name is Kimberley. My fiance is Philip. We are very interested in becoming a permanent part of your community. We both have skills we think would be very helpful. Philip is HVAC certified and a great carpenter. He has lots of experience it electricity and all that stuff I don’t understand. I have been in restraunt management. I’ve done lots of volunteer work in soup kitchens across the country. We have been living in our RV for well over a year now. We LOVE nature. We both love gardening and Pip is happiest when he has a product, something to build. Our needs are very small. We can either live in our rv, in a cabin, or in a tent. We would love to build a tiny cabin to live in there. We are willing, excited even to help in any way we can. This would be a dream come true for us. I’ve been called a Hippie all my life, now that my children are all grown and chasing their dreams I am looking for the opportunity to live mine.    I look forward to hearing back from you.                                                             Thank you,                                 Kimberley Durham

My husband and I are interested in learning about off grid opportunities. Our kids are grown. We want simpler, self-sufficient lives. We’ve been researching for quite a while. He is a USAF vet with many skills: hunting, building, cooking, gardening, electronics, auto repair, computer repair, the repair of most anything really. He is also a musician. My job has always been computers but I can learn anything and can do what is necessary. We are Christians, Libertarians. We enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and helping others but we also enjoy our privacy, one of the best things about country life.

36 Eric Daniels { 07.01.13 at 8:29 pm }

Hi, My wife an I was working hard to build a stronger community here in PA. It was planned to get the 32 families semi off grid and well. We had a further plan to travel America and help many other communities as well. Our community of 32 families was taken by Aqua America last year for a pump station for the gas industry. On top of all that I, along with many others have lost our jobs. My wife is from TN and we desire to relocate. I drive truck for a living so once relocated a job shouldn’t be too hard to find. My wife is also a very hard worker and has enjoyed working with me on many projects. We aren’t looking for people who spend too much time talking over what needs to be done, we prefer to be the people who get it done. We have a camper and good ideas at making it livable in any climate for little effort. If your serious about building a community we’d love to be a part of it. Our final plans would to be to get communities all over the world sustainable.

If anyone would like info on the community that was lost look up saveriverdale.com or email me at e_daniels_sr@yahoo.com
