[...] But they aren’t the only ones thinking about growing food for cities or to decrease hunger. Japan is already producing food this way for the masses. They had a case of tainted food from China and then decided they would create these Vegetable Factories to control their own food. http://www.off-grid.net/2010/01/16/vegetable-factory-in-a-box/ [...]

In actuality this is not a new concept. This idea was first realized as a way to grow hydroponics fodder/ grass/ sprouts 365 days a year come wind, sleet, or snow more than ten years ago. The only difference now is that they are 1. Using LED technology originally developed by NASA and 2. Now picked up by big business.

The thing is, that LED lights only give off (though efficient) a small amount of radiation. Plants use what is known as PAR energy (photo active radiation) through a wide range of spectrums, focusing on “blue” light at 425-450 nm (nanometers) for growing greens and 600-650nm for flowering/ fruiting. Yes plants can be grown with LEDs but in order to supply each part of the plant with as full a spectrum as possible, the plants or the lights have to be in patterns and they have to move, so at this point in time, I see this as more of a gimmick than true production able technology.

I can supply plans or build one for you, using T-5 florescent tubes if you are serious.

P.S. The Omega garden was the best design of its time, but due to its super high cost for initial investment, is now defunct. There are other comparatively energy efficient methods to grow greens but are bulky and awkward to use. Sun power is still the best choice unless none is available.

Cheers

Given the glut of shipping container found in most North American entre-ports it should be easy to buy good used containers. Locally in Vancouver BC area such containers sell for under $2000. Would the design details of the required electrical and plumbing for hydroponics be available to the public?
There are at least two companies I know of currently selling shipping containers to the public. Great Idea!

Sounds like what I wanted to try and build 6 years ago. Only mine was for people off grid. 8ft X 12ft x 7ft. Led lights were my first thought but I am trying to use the water coming out of the ground that is at 48 to 50 degrees. Heat transfer with a solar charging system. The price still seems to get in the way regardless what I try. It sound like a good idea for pest control and production. But for the small off grid person it seems to be the $$$ costs you to get a fresh saled. But it does work and in the future there will a need for these. Best of luck.
