Has the author ever been to Rio Rancho, New Mexico? LOL We used to live there, and lived in a new housing tract with an HOA. Didn't see any shacks around. (Left there in 2007)
There probably are a few of them, way - way out in the desert.
But, not many.
But, I hope people reading this article don't take it literally. And expect to be able to move there and find tons of affordable off the grid housing. It just isn't there anymore.
We actually left because the housing prices were too high in Rio Rancho, so bought a house in a surrounding city. But, still work in Rio Rancho - so am there daily. And, shop there often and go to restaurants there.
This article - while minutely factual - is extremely misleading.
Has the author been to Rio Rancho in the past 5 years? I wonder?
P.S. I'm not the biggest fan in the world of Rio Rancho. Too much traffic, houses were too close together, too many people. Felt squished there.
But, it sure sounds like we see different worlds than what is written in this article.
Oh, and I was in Rio Rancho today - Christmas - visiting relatives. And they live in a house built in 2005 in an HOA with a park and a community pool. There are many, many expensive homes in Rio Rancho - especially in the N/E part. We'll never in a million years be able to afford one of them.
I sure don't see it as a place to go after a foreclosure...

Yeah, no wonder the houses are so cheap: you get evicted if your house is not big enough, lol. That's a genuis way to upgrade the neighbourhood: make all poor people move out.

Used mobile homes can be found for free on Craigslist. Of course, she'd have to get someone to help move it to her property and set it up.

Would it be possible to upgrade the community to earthen or earth bag dwellings? the cost is comprable to new trailers and the living environment could be enhanced. I have relatives that homesteaded
rural desert areas in california in the fifties and this sounds like a similar scenario,
thanks for your article
