have you heard, you can now get a bigger 8 cyl. engine in the colorado, obviously gm hasn't learned anything. they should have been working on a smaller more fuel efficient engine. if a 4695 lb. hummer can have a 5 cyl 3.7l.? eng. a small 3459 lb. truck can have 2.ol 4 cyl engine. i say they shouldn't have gotten anything and left to go under.

Excellent article Betsy!
You could do worse than to send those so called execs over here to study how to build decent cars that will not only exceed 30 mpg, but in some cases 60 and even 80mpg!!
There seems to be a fixation with the V8, which is where the problems start, and anything with less than 200BHP is not worth considering.
My wife's car is a Citroen Xara picasso diesel (needed for the weekly shop and 2 large bearded collies)and we get 42.8 mpg with ease.
We live out in the sticks (nearest town 10 miles) so I also have a long wheelbase Landrover, currently under refurbishment by myself, due to the previous owner's neglect, this does 32 mpg on 70% veg oil.
It's 25 years old, and with reasonable luck will last another 25 or even 50 which, when you consider the "whole of life" or "ashes to ashes" concept must put it among the greenest vehicles on the planet, parts are easily replaced..its just a "big boys construction set"
Did you know...75% of all Landrovers are still running!!
So Prius eat your heart out!
But not to lose focus, agreed, the U.S. big 3 need to produce leaner greener more sustainable vehicles that will in turn give rise to a more viable secure future.
There you are, my 2 pennyworth from the other side of the pond!
Keep up the good work!
Mike.
