Dear Les;

I have watched every time I can catch “Off theGrid” being played on PlanetGreen. It states it was recorded in 1999. My question is, how did it go? The children are adults now. How did they fair? Do they still live near by? I would love to live off the grid!!

I watch and liked the survivorman series, and the off the grid special, but would like more information, mfr of the components you used. I’m hoping to set up an RV to be off the grid, pick up a couple acres or more, the RV with gasoline generator (have an Onan to install in the RV) a small wood stove for some heat and cooking. would like to start small on the Solar and keep adding to it, along with wind turbine(s).

Also a small green house and a large garden, possibly a few chickens but that’s as close to a farm as I’m looking to go… also into prospecting, fishing, beach combing and hiking, so plan on spending a lot of free time doing those as well.

Les,
I am a die hard fan of your survivorman show, I even made kits for survival for our Canadian fishing trip for all the guys just in case something goes wrong as you have demonstrated.

Only after I found channel 201 (green channel) did I learn you also did “Off the Grid”. It is truly another simple “thought” we each should carry in planning for our families and the future of our envirioment.

try this, Buy a RV and live in it for a year or two. If you and the family can handle it then going off the grid will not be that much of a shock to you system.

I liked the story. We are planning to build a home in 2007-2008. It will be an off-grid, strawbale home. Things here in Saskatchewan are a little different than Ontario, but the story about Les Stroud’s project still had great information.

To Les Stroud:
I caught the show last night. Great. My son & I watch “Survivorman.”
Years ago I helped with the labour (stripping the pine logs, roof, etc) with friends who built a log home North of Kingston. They were on the grid. At 48, I still only have a vague idea of the challenges of moving “off the grid” and it’s potential for retirement in 8 – 10 years. Where did you start? I think there are still tracts of property within 50 miles of Cornwall, Ontario.
