New powers to prevent motor vehicles from using English footpaths and bridleways came into force yesterday, reports the Press Association.
The regulations are particularly aimed at stopping motorbikes and 4×4 off-roaders using paths in national parks such as the Lake District and the Yorkshire Moors.
The Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 makes it illegal to ride any motor vehicle on anything which is recorded on maps as a bridleway or footpath.
Previously National Park Authorities have been powerless to stop such behaviour, but the act enables them to bring in their own traffic regulation orders.
