I'd like to thank you for the insite on edible wild foods. That was an aspect I hadn't conbsidered. The woods I live by would most likley be hunted out in 6 months but the plants may be overlooked. I have been preparing for about 6 months now. First I bought an assortment of firearms while there still available not to loot or plunder just to hold onto what I have. I live about 20 miles from the city but it's just a matter of time. Next a diesel generator I have access to about 3000 gallons kerosen enough to run the freezers and furnace for a year or two I hope. Right now I only have about 6 months worth of food for the three of us but combined with livestock (chickens are good ), gardening, and collecting food It could last a lot longer. I really don't want to be out scavaging. The national guard will be patroling with orders to shoot on site just like after any disaster. I know because in my home town after the 1977 flood martial law was instated and people were killed. Looters mostly and even with that deterant the stores were cleaned out. The government isn't just going to through up it's hands. It's more likely to try to maintain order through force. All I'm saying is it's better to already have what you need than to have to go out looking for it.

To Fran:
Well here we are almost three years later. An economic 'collapse' of unprecendented specter has occured since your post.
My observations: With apologies to the millions that have lost their jobs; many of these peoples are getting by only because of the goodness of others and massive stimulus. If a social collapse of say 25% more intensity would occur, those millions in the cities will be headed your way in the country rural areas.
I would hope millions would wait patiently for hours in lines for food/water/toiletries/etc but I don't know.
If we have seen and learned anything this past 2 years, it is the status quo; whether Democrats or Republicans that really messed up this great country this past 30 years.
At the end of the game both King and pawns go in the same box. and there are more pawns than kings...supper time!

I am currently preparing a guide to survival post-peak oil in urban centers, which I think is one of the most important things we can plan for. Millions of people live in cities, so individuals or families planning to live on a rural plot for when the apocalypse comes will only help a tiny percentage of the population. Although the rural solution is a great one, it isn't realistic in taking into account the realities of the masses who may not have that choice. Let's revolutionize survivalism. Let's think about the masses and plan on making cities liveable without electricity, plumbing, heating, refrigeration, motorized transportation, and imported food sources.

Amazing. I have done and am doing every single one of the things you describe. I am currently in the phase of learning and implementing organic gardening and greenhouse design and construction, also wild food harvesting and food preservation. However, I haven't done everything I do because I think society will collapse and this is my solution to that problem; I have done all this because I think that this is part of the solution to the planet's environmental stresses. Simply put, you do this to save your ass when society implodes. I do it to save my ass because I think it will contribute to making sure society does not. Reactive vs. proactive. Same solution, juxtapositioned perspectives.
