‘Zero Impact, Absolute Exclusivity’ sounds almost too good to be true, but the opening this winter of the Whitepod alpine retreat seems to deliver. Travellers keen to experience the fragile and breathtaking environment of the Swiss Alps wilderness, can do so secure in the knowledge that the camp, consisting of five pods at over 1700m will be removed in spring and leave absolutely no trace.

Sitting on wooden platforms, the pods take the form of dome tents with wood burning stoves and no compromise on comfort. Devised to adhere to the regulations of world tourism organisation, the founder Sofia de Meyer aimed to create a ‘haven of beauty and tranquillity’ that relies heavily on recycling and local natural materials. Sustainability is key for the camp; solar and rechargeable energy are used for lighting, sustainable local wood for heating; Ecover products for cleaning.

They aren’t resting on any laurels though. Currently working with Future Forests to devise a system to neutralise all the camp’s carbon dioxide emissions, they are also aiming for full Ecotourism accreditation. When not marvelling at the clever pods and taking notes for your own off-grid empire, guests can take guided tours or visit the ski resort below in Villars.
